From 16-18 April 2019, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) convened the African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development in Marrakesh, Morocco. The theme of this year’s forum was “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”. The overarching goal of the forum is to unite the efforts of African countries to achieve two mutually reinforcing agendas: the SDGs and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The forum provides a platform for reviewing progress, challenges, and opportunities and encouraging multi-stakeholder engagement and knowledge exchange across Africa.

The forum carried out an in-depth review of SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), as well as the corresponding goals of African Union’s Agenda 2063.

The RFS programme was highlighted in various sessions of the ARFSD 2019. Valuable outcomes of the programme fed into the development of key messages that will be presented at the 2019 session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) and the World Summit on Sustainable Development in New York in July and September 2019.
