Wednesday, 15 September 2021 - The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), within the framework of the Resilient Food Systems (RFS) programme, will hold the first webinar on responsible land tenure governance as a vehicle to achieve Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) and combat drought and desertification. The webinar is part of a capacity-building process that entails a series of four webinars and discussion forums with 17 sub-Saharan African countries.

Speakers from FAO, UNCCD, the African Land Policy Centre (ALPC), the Committee to Combat Drought in the Sahel (CILSS), the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning in Kenya, and the Senegalese Agricultural Research Institute (ISRA) will discuss the important role of land tenure in the context of desertification, land degradation and drought in the sub–Saharan Africa region. Several experiences from the region will be shared during the process to feed the debate. The participants will include UNCCD national focal points, civil society representatives, project managers and technical advisors from FAO, RFS, EU Land governance programs and other initiatives.

Responsible governance of land is a fundamental component of sustainable land management and an important element of addressing desertification, land degradation and drought. This notion was acknowledged by the 197 Parties of the UNCCD in 2019 as the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP14) adopted a landmark decision on land tenure.

To date, the UNCCD stands as the only multilateral environmental agreement explicitly addressing the issue of land tenure. Following COP14, the UNCCD Secretariat, together with the FAO, is developing a technical guide on how to integrate the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of land, fisheries, and forests in the context of national food security (VGGT) into implementing Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) whilst achieving multiple benefits for wellbeing, food security, livelihoods, land-based jobs for youth and the environment.

Building on the learnings and experiences from RFS, the EU Land Governance Programme in Africa and other flagship initiatives in Africa, this series of four webinars will support an increased understanding of the land degradation–land tenure nexus and serve to receive feedback on the draft technical guide.
